During December’s Town Council meeting, Town Council voted unanimously to extend the terms of the current vacancies on the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals until February 28, 2022, so further information can be obtained from applicants. There will be two vacancies on the Planning Commission and two on the Board of Zoning Appeals. Once appointed, terms will expire on December 31, 2025.
The Pendleton Planning Commission meets on the second Thursday of each month, and the Board of Zoning Appeals meets quarterly. Both Boards have Called Meetings scheduled periodically.
The Planning Commission serves as a citizen advisory group to the Town Council on planning matters. Typically, Planning Commission members are laypersons from the community. The Comprehensive Planning Act of 1994 (Section 6-29-310, et seq.) requires the commission members to represent a broad cross-section of the interests and concerns within the community. The Act advises governing bodies to consider the proposed members’ professional expertise and community knowledge. The Act spells out the Planning Commission’s powers and duties.
The Board of Zoning Appeals and the Zoning Administrator are responsible for administering the Zoning Ordinance. The Zoning Ordinance creates the Board of Zoning Appeals. The State zoning enabling legislation gives the Board certain exclusive and well-defined powers. The Board may: hear appeals concerning the Zoning Administrator’s interpretation and enforcement of the Zoning Ordinance, hear and decide appeals for variances from the Ordinance, decide applications for special exceptions, and remand a matter to the administrative official for supplementation of the record. (Section 6-29-820)
Applications will be accepted until noon on February 2, 2022.
